MONTAGE IT: POSTER

MONTAGE IT: FINAL SUBMISSION

Each scene is a combination of building sketches, Tim burton’s own cartoon artworks and real life landscapes. This is reflective of Burton’s film characters which always seem to be on the brink of reality.

Building in context: The model site is placed so that it blends with the cityscape/ alley way that surrounds it. Its structure is elevated and is designed to mimic a tree house that is simplistic and childish as Burton at times appears to be. However the random placement of Burton’s strange characters in the scene hints at the darker and nonsensical aspect of his imagination.

MONTAGE IT: LANDSCAPE & PERSPECTIVE

These are the originals unedited

Two images below: combined to make daytime landscape

Night time image
To continue the vector like quality of the montages which extended to a vanishing point
The night time image was made from a combination of many alleyways and sketches.

below are few of the images used in the night montage.

in total: To create the desired sketchy/realistic effect, the night and day time montage used a total of 50-70 layers while the interior had 30

Model development from criticism
I developed my model so that it was more of a rectangular structure with an extended platform. However i did intend the model to appear like a tree house so the elevated poles were left as it was
.
The model it self is, admittedly weak, however my concept would be clearer once the montage layout is done.

Montage it: model progress

Design:
door + staircase that leads to the roof (top right corner of the model) aims to reflect the wild persona  of Burton, whose nonsensical imagination allows us to escape reality and explore new experiences.

Large open window + elevated platform allows inhabitant is able to overlook the city without comprising their own privacy as it is elevated high enough so passerby's cannot look in. Provides a place of inspiration.

Ladder adds to the childish/nonsensical persona of Burton.

Tutor comments:
the overall model is too "box like", like a children's cubby house

Montage it: Inspiration

Tim Burton

Concept: My montages are designed to capture Tim burton’s persona, in particular, his imagination that has a childish sensibility but is at the same time surreal and gothic.
  • Through my montages i want to develop this idea that everything isn't as it seems.
  • The simplicity of my model and the way it blends into the landscape is a facade for a studio space that fosters Burton's surreal and dark imagination.

Fisher house model- 1:50 scale

Above: the model is cut so that it opens in two sections.
Interior detailing: on the right shows the detachable chimney.

Looking in
the overall design was to be simple and clean.

Materials: 5 different balsa wood thicknesses were used to reflect different structural aspects of the house that appeared in the plan.

Aim: My aim was to create a precise/clean, minimalistic model of the fisher house.
Changes in material on the exterior of the Fisher house is shown through the change in balsa orientation.

photos are unavailable as the model has been taken for exhibition
will update after

Contours: The seamlessness of the contours was achieved by cutting each section at a 30 degree angle and then sanding it.

Trees: I have a pet peeve for everything to look relatively realistic.
Electrocuting myself slightly in the process Haha… I stripped wire from an old lamp to make the trees. The thinness and number of single wires allowed me to create branches and twigs that mimicked real trees, enhancing the trees “realistic-ness”.

Water was made from stretched blue plastic placed underneath a clear plastic sheeting

Note from tutor: water doesn't always have to be blue (preferably not blue)
