ARCH 1101

A MODERN LANDSCAPE

Gen-ed : COFA
Beginners in Acrylic  2014
1230 x 750 mm

From afar the artwork gives the facade of a traditional Chinese painting. However as one steps close, it becomes evident that the mountainous backdrop is instead 'fields' of skyscrapers and industrial buildings. My artwork appropriates the ancient practice of calligraphy and its subject by altering the traditional backdrop to better reflect today's industrialised reality. It is an artwork that not necessarily aims to challenge our reality but serves as a candid observation.

The work is constructed from prints individually and tediously montages in layers of off-white acrylic washes. The aim is to re-create the somewhat surreal and almost claustrophobic atmosphere as seen in CBD's around the world, in particular, Japan and China.

TADAO ANDO

Top : Water Temple
Bottom: Contemporary Art Museum,  Naoshima
Robust and grounded yet all the while sensitive. Ando's architecture frames, stages and emphasizes the quality of light, water and material to enrich the human experience.
