Draft sketches. plan and section of underground amphitheaters

following my concept of 'providing controlled scenic backdrops for experimental art spaces/amphitheaters.

In brief:
-Best way to address this without compromising the existing site + views was to place the structure underground.
-New structure also provides a new circulation path: previous sandstone staircase now leads to underground foyer- branches outwards to several spaces:
-These spaces respond to the nature of the site with slopes in three directions,                                                 towards: 1. water reserve, 2. harbour and stairs down towards open gathering                                               space

  1. Hi Jess, thought I'd responded to this earlier today, but can't see the comment I posted.

the idea is great as it brings back an initial notion you had about cutting into the landscape with shafts/slots etc. that limit/focus views. make sure you do this. difficult to see exactly where it's going in the site because of limited model extent.

think carefully about the progression of entry down the stairs. can they accentuate the feeling of moving down through a slot into the land? and how does their alignment relate specifically to a particular view as you move down? likewise for window of amphitheatre? where exactly is it orientated towards?

check the size of the amphitheatres vs. no. of expected audience - AJ Metric Handbook gives dimensions for seating, aisles, etc. depending on capacity.

look at OMA's Casa da Music in Portugal, as well as this house by Siza.

if you're going to do this, see if you can reference the loader in some way in terms of the form of the concrete mass and its relationship to the landscape
